Day 20 |
NB:
Once again it was time to move on and we headed north towards Digne-les-Bains.
We went through the Canyon du Verdon, couldn't seem to get enough of mountains.
You can go on either side of the canyon, which is truly beautiful. At one point we stopped at a lookout area (with about 15 other mc travellers) and noted French plates on a BMW 635csi. To our surprise, out popped a retired couple who addressed us in Danish! I had almost forgotten what it sounds like. We chatted briefly before moving on. I think we passed them about 6 times, waving each time, between stops for photographs on the way out of the canyon. A fun ride. It was somewhat sobering to come around a corner in time to see some kid pulling his TransAlp out from under a guardrail just before the end, though.
In the evening we found a nice spot in the woods, just off the highway outside Digne-les-Bains.
It was complete with fireplace and picnic table.
Heaven! The stars were beautiful and we reveled in our good luck. Around 3 AM, though, we
were rather rudely awakened by a group of teenagers who came by in a car to smoke up (we
think). We were unnoticed until they noticed our bikes on the way out, but it was somewhat
alarming at first.
Roads: We took the highway (A51) out of Marseille, it is always the easiest way to get
out of a big city. In Aix-en-provence we changed to some more affordable roads, the N96. After
Peyrolles we took the D952, which is the road that goes through the Canyon du Verdon. Recommended!
