Day 23 |
We started relatively early because we had a long day ahead of us.
After a boring ride to Milano, the roads started getting nice again. We went around lake Como and then north to the mountains. Oh yeah, remember to carry CASH with you if you need to buy gas in Italy. It's a pretty big pain when you are driving on air and the credit card that worked in Germany, France and Spain suddenly is not accepted. Also take into account that some gas stations are closed on Sunday and others on Monday, while the remaining ones are closed at lunch time. Some of them have these automatic machines where you can insert bills and get gas, make sure you just use 10,000 liras bills at a time or you'll end up putting in too much money.. no change is given.
The roads in the Italian Alps are really great. And as you get closer to Austria, the scenery gets more and more
similar, and so do the people, never realized there were people speaking german in Italy.
Shortly after
crossing into Austria, we were met by a good friend, Christoph. He is a real Tyrolian (well he would like to be anyways).
He took us to his cabin, where
we were warmly welcomed with Austrian beer, ham and schnapps...leading to...
Roads: We actually took the toll highway A4 until Milano, less hassle. Followed on the S35 to Como and them the S340
around lake Como, very nice. The S38 towards Sondrio took us into the italian alps, did the Paso di Apricia on the S39
and followed on the S42 after Edolo. We forked on the S238 towards Fondo and then right through the Paso di Mendola to
Bolzano. Prime mountain roads! The S12 took us the rest of the way to Austria.
